Ducts through floors in Groups I-2 and I-3

Changed

In 2024 the Group I-2 and I-3 limit moved from the main rule to the three-floor exception.

Outside Groups I-2 and I-3, a duct connecting no more than two stories may pass through a rated floor without a shaft with a listed fire damper at the floor line, or with the duct protected per Section 714.5. The exception for up to three floors without dampers (small steel ducts in a wall cavity serving one dwelling or sleeping unit) falls under the same occupancy limit.
